Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block #1 Start by marking and cutting the Color 1, 2-1/2" x 13" strip into two 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Next mark and cut the Color 2, 3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares. Also cut one Color 2, 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle...
#2 Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2, 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark in the 3-7/8" square lines and then mark in the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you eight half squares. Press seams to darker side, trim these back to measure 3-1/2" if needed... #3 Sew the two Color 1 and Color 2, 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles together as shown at left using the standard scant 1/4" seam. Press seams towards the darker strips. Square this back to measure 6-1/2" square if needed... #4 Piece the block by sewing rows of the units we just made and cut. For the center area...sew two pairs of half squares together and join them to the center pieced square. Alternate pressing direstions by row to keep your seams lying nice and flat! |
